Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Welcome to your regular round up from the St Matthew’s Neighbourhood Policing Team. Keeping the different communities in St Matthew’s informed of some of the activity that goes on.

What’s been happening on the patch:

Most of last week was taken up with the St Matthew’s NHT were focusing on
Operation Sceptre – a week of action against knives
You may have seen officers out and about this week conducting various activities,

There were two weapon sweeps where we searched specific locations for any knives/ weapons that maybe hidden in public places. These took place in Walsall Arboretum on Tuesday with community volunteers with metal detectors and in Caldmore on Friday. The good news is that in both locations, thankfully nothing was found.

On Monday in the town centre, we checked that retailers are being responsible and only selling knives to people of the correct age.  Visiting and checking that they understand and are comfortable about ‘Challenge 25’, an initiative for stores to challenge those who look underage, and trying to purchase items where a person needs to be 18 years old.

On Thursday we also be took the opportunity to talk to all of Year 9 at Blue Coat C.E. Academy school about knives, the dangers of knife carrying in public and the legal consequences of carrying knives and weapons.

On Monday evening some of the team were out and about, in partnership with Greensquare Accord support staff, visiting properties and locations across our patch, where there have been issues such as Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and neighbourhood issues which have implications on the wider community.

Now here is a question(s) for you:

Check your knowledge on knife related things.

    1.  What is the meaning of, an offensive weapon?
    2.  It is illegal for shops to sell knives to anyone under what age?
    3.  What is the West midlands Police campaign against knife crime called?
    4.  What do you think a knife bin is used for?
    5.  Is there a ‘knife bin’ located in Walsall, if so where do you think it is likely to be?

Sorry no prizes, just for fun, but the answers will be in the next bulletin.

If you want to talk to about knife crime to anyone we have help and advice on how to have that chat, including what to say, check out our website.
