Information sent on behalf of Staffordshire Police

Dog owners are being reassured over incidents of pet thefts and attempts in the Lichfield District and surrounding areas as initial research indicates cases are low.

And officers say the force will continue to respond to reported incidents but have moved to relay fears over a perceived rise in dog thefts.

There have been a number of posts across social media over suspicious incidents and people conspiring to steal dogs. We have not received reports in recent weeks of dogs being stolen and our message is very much for people to ‘stay calm’. We do not have any information that there are people deliberately touring the area aiming to steal dogs.

We are aware of people reporting cable ties being put on lampposts but there is no evidence this is an indication of thieves targeting the area.

I would always ask dog owners to be vigilant but not to be unduly alarmed by what may be occurring in other areas of the country as that is not being reflected in Staffordshire. I reiterate we have had no reports of dog thefts in Lichfield District and we do not want people to be unnecessarily fearful.”

Recently the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) has issued advice to owners following reports of dog thefts rising across the country. To guard against thefts owners are continued to ask to take security measures including thinking twice before leaving their pet tied up outside a shop, not leaving their dog in a car alone and varying times and routes of the walks they go on.
