Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

    Good Evening,

    To Our Cycling Community

Purchasing a new bike this Christmas?
Lucky enough for Santa to be delivering you one?
Or looking to treat yourself so you can begin commuting to work in the new year?

If you have a new bike (or even an existing one) please ensure you follow our advice;-

    1) Secure your bike with a secure lock such as a D or U Lock. These can be purchased from most bike retailers, but also from most Police stations for £10. They are harder for thieves to cut through.

    2) Consider registering your bike on Bike Register;-

Bike register, The National Cycle database, is operated by Selectamark security systems. They are the market leader in the field of property marking and asset identification and offer a full range of property marking products including that of SelectaDNA.
They are now the largest, FREE, cycle register in the UK with over 840,000 cycles registered on their database. They are a Secure by design (SBD) database and all Police forces including British Transport Police are registered with them.

If your bike is stolen, you simply notify them on the easy to use App, accessible on your mobile phone. You can even ask that a photograph of your bike is circulated for local users to keep a look out.

Police officers have access to the App also and can pro actively scan cycles whilst on patrol or whilst visiting second hand dealers. Once scanned, we will be notified if it is a stolen bike and can then look to return the bike to the owner. #whatsnottolike

Beginning in February 2021, Central Leicester NPA will be working with Leicester City Council to host a number of events promoting FREE bike marking and registration of cycles on the Bike Register system. These events will be promoted on Neighbourhood Link and also on our Social Media accounts, so if by that time, you haven’t signed up, why not come along and mark your bike for free.

    3) Always look to park your bike in a secure place within the City. Town Hall Square Bike park, offers all day parking for £1. Your bike is secured inside where it will be safe.

    4) Make a record of all your bike details on our Bike Passports. These are available at Front Enquiry offices or during most of our engagement and are FREE. They allow you to record all the details the Police will need if you unfortunately have to report your bike as stolen.

We are aware that Cycle Crime is a concern for people in the City and we want to help you to keep your bikes safe.

Don’t give thieves an easy ride.

    Best Wishes and Merry Christmas

    Sgt Amanda Boswell
