    Alert message sent 20/10/2020 12:47:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

    Hello Citizen

Over the last few days we have seen an increase in distraction burglaries across the Black Country and Sandwell.

Currently there are no similarities in these instances other than the criminals targeted older community members and vulnerable residents. Offenders have gained entry to these peoples homes via pretending to be from the water company or running a check on the boilers

We are investigating and supporting the victims  - but to keep you safe, here are some other tips for what to do if someone calls at your door:

-Check to see who it is by using the spy or look through a front window.
-Always put the chain on before you open the door.
-If you don't know the caller, ask to see their identity card. Check it carefully, and keep the chain on while you do this.
-If you're still not sure, ask the caller to come back later. You can then check their story by phoning the organisation or company they claim to represent
-Ensure your back door is locked.
-Watch out for anyone who says they're in a hurry. Don't let them pressure you.
-If you have any suspicions at all, don't let them in.
-If you're still not happy, webchat the police online; https://west-midlands.police.uk/contact-us/livechat  or phone them on 999 in an emergency, and tell them what's happened.

    Take good care

    Kindest regards

    Jessica
