This message is being sent to all Neighbourhood Watch members in Crawley – co-ordinators are requested to forward it to their members.
For the past few years Neighbourhood Watch in Crawley has been proud to take part in a very popular event, Crawley Junior Citizen. This is an annual programme, organised by Crawley Borough Council, held at The Hawth for the benefit of over a thousand Year 6 local primary school children, ages 10-11, over a two week period in September. Children come to The Hawth by coach accompanied by their teachers, for a morning or an afternoon, and are spilt into groups of up to 10. Each small group then goes around a range of interesting and interactive scenarios presented by organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, WSCC Community Safety, the RNLI and others. Each scenario lasts a maximum of 10 minutes, so the eager children keep their interest and are very attentive and well behaved throughout.
What does Crawley Neighbourhood Watch present? In our scenario we spend a minute or two explaining in very simple words what Neighbourhood Watch is about, and how we help to keep our communities safe. Then we show the children a short video, about 3 minutes, in which they will see a very realistic possible crime taking place, one which they can easily relate to. We then spend the rest of the time asking the children, who have just witnessed this event, questions which the police may well want to ask them. What happened, what were the people wearing, what did they say, can you describe the vehicle involved, should the victim have done something different to help keep her safe, etc.? It’s about reinforcing safety messages that the children have already received in school, and helping to develop their already powerful observation skills.
Would you like to help us? Usually we have two presenters at any one time, and one of these is very experienced. The other can learn very easily! We don’t need to use a script, but we do have a list of questions and answers, so you won’t need to memorise anything. It doesn’t matter if you run out of time, or if you miss out a question. It will be fun for all, and the time will fly past! Free hot drinks and biscuits are available for presenters. The car park is free.
When does Crawley Junior Citizen take place? On school days between Tuesday 12th and Friday 22nd September 2017. There are two sessions every day. The morning starts at about 0915 and ends at about 1145, and the afternoon is from about 1230 to 1500. Usually there is a break for the presenters during each session so you can sit down with a tea or coffee.
Would you like to give it a go? We welcome new volunteers to come and join our team of presenters. If you can please come along, even if only for a morning or an afternoon, that would be great. We will have a roster and can fit you in at times which are convenient for you. To let us know please click on the Reply button below.
